Take Breath
From the airborne COVID-19 virus to George Floyd’s resounding last words—“I can’t breathe!”—the year 2020 remains riddled with respiratory hazards. One of several monographic surveys that emerged from this poignant, yet fallow time is the current Take a Breath exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) in Dublin. The group show explores the historical, political and cultural significance of breathing. Yet Take a Breath isn’t generic: the exhibition reminds us that the respiratory motion is more than just an act of oxygenating us humans; it’s a sound, a feeling, an embodiment and a threat.
